"Family Portrait"
Oil on canvas
T.M. Davy
What I Like About This: Although I can't say this is one of my favorite works, it is an intriguing painting created with a great deal of skill and attention to detail. Done in a realistic style, at first glance this piece appears to be merely a formal painting of a gay couple. But on closer inspection, one discovers it's explicit homoeroticism. The couple are actually revealed to be in an intimate pose, with the pants of the chap in his partner's lap being down and upon his upper thigh, while his partner reaches into his open fly. Their almost saintly expressions belie the truth of their ambitions. The addition of the OGT feline completes the artist's attempt to unequivocally declare his subjects to be a gay couple.
