What I like about this: While I haven't seen this image used in advertising yet, this has got to be one of my all time favorite stock images featuring a real-life couple in their home. The look of genuine love & happiness and everyday domesticity in this image is for many of us the thing we dared not dream possible... And yet, for those of us my age and older, we discovered the world had changed around us making all of this possible.

From an email this morning
Of course I'm sure they didn't send this to all their customers... The data brokers will have given them the 411 about our household a long time ago. Still, with most of corporate America bending the knee to Trump, it was a welcome surprise to see.

"The Truth About The Machines..."
The machines are listening, don't be fooled...
Despite all the denials from our tech overlords, it's clear to me that the machines (our devices) are listening to us. We've all been creeped out by having said something and then within minutes an ad for it shows up on one of our screens. Well, I'm not fooled. This morning, this beauty turned up almost as soon as I got online. Last night, Husband and I had a little disagreement about the division of household chores (you know the stuff coupes usually disagree about). And although I tell him all the time that the machines are listening, he always has one of more of his devices with him whereas I rarely do outside of working hours.
Now I must admit, what they served up this morning is rather apropo in light of what the algorithms heard last night. They even made sure to make the image a photo of a same sex couple so I could "identify!"
So you might be asking, "What's wrong with this?"
It's a sales pitch! This is from the online mental health counseling app
Sorry, the machines are already in my head without permission, I'm not going to open the door and invite them in to rearrange the furniture.

"Sometimes In Advertising..."
Have you seen this hilariously entertaining commercial from L'Oréal's skin care brand CeraVe? I saw it for the first time this morning and loved it! And as I wondered why, since I don't do a skin care routine of any kind, I realized it was because I thought the doctor was cute. I'll admit it, the older I grow, the more I've started to notice when I see someone whose attractiveness I find appealing. Imagine my surprise when as I Googled the ad, I found out he's a real dermatologist (which the ad reveals, as well). So down the internet rabbit hole I went... And I discovered the good doctor is quite the social media devotee.

Geez, Doc... if I wasn't a married man, you could pop my pimple anytime!

"Sometimes In Advertising..."
What's to complain about here...?
Well, just this, I know they didn't send this email to everyone on their mailing list. So if they're telling me what they think I want to hear, what are they telling the haters that shop their stores too?
This is why I hate targeted advertising. You can never know if they're sincerely sharing their corporate beliefs or just conveniently pandering to make a buck. If they want to convince me, put this up on a billboard along the highway or in your store windows.
So now Kroger knows I'm gay... I didn't tell 'em
Gee, Thanks Google!

"Sometimes In Advertising..."
Hard to believe, but the good folks at Hallmark have been at it for 50 years with these ugly things... Don't get me wrong, I know millions of folks love collecting these, but if you've ever seen a tree with many years worth of these, you look at it and go what is all this junk, "Why are there Star Wars and Snoopy ornaments, baseball players and gumball machines mixed in with the glass balls?" Nevertheless, congratulations Hallmark and thank you for the inclusive advertising and the Hallmark Holiday films of the last few years that tell our stories too.
Scenes from this year's gay-inclusive Hallmark film
"Christmas on Cherry Lane"
Jonathan Bennett and Vincent Rodriguez III play the latest gay couple in this Hallmark Christmas movie who unexpectedly have the chance to expand their family on Christmas Eve
Guess where new daddies got the plush reindeer...
And it wouldn't be a Hallmark Christmas film without shameless promotion of their Keepsake ornaments throughout the movie
And by the way, I love the OGT* "Hollywood Wrapped 1" gift boxes throughout!
* OGT: Obviously Gay Trait
1: Hollywood Wrap, a style of gift wrapping where the box and lid are wrapped separately. The gift is placed inside, and the lid is set on top of the box. Nothing, except sometimes a ribbon, secures the lid to the box. Back in the day, department store gift wrapping departments would offer this service for an additional fee. With a Hollywood Wrap no one has tear off that beautiful and expensive wrapping paper. Often, the box itself would become a keepsake and be used to store the gift or other treasured items. I can remember being the only one in line ordering a Hollywood Wrap when I got to the counter, later I realized, it's an OGT, we love it!

"A Love Story..."
Remember that golden time about 10 years ago when it seemed like the battle for acceptance had been won...? This lovely ad from global food giant Nabisco was groundbreaking in sharing the story of a real married couple and their family.
Nabisco (Mondelēz International) stood up to the bullies from One Million Moms and other right wing conservative groups and made a statement about how love is equal and is always wholesome.

I am so sick of seeing this ad...
The data gods at Google and Meta have decided,
he's gay and he'll look at this ad.
Well...

"Sometimes In Advertising..."
Remember this advert from Kohl's in 2015...?
It seemed like everything was gonna be alright... There were haters about, but Marriage Equality had become the law of the land just months before. Barack Obama was the POTUS and nobody thought Donald Trump had a snowball's chance. The nightmare of the pandemic seemed unimaginable to anyone except Hollywood and a few scientist who tried to warn us... How times have changed!
I'm thankful that I can say, "I saw the time imagined here." Today, I pray for a return to our national senses and to a time of lasting acceptance and inclusion for all in a world where we are free to love and be loved.
That is my Thanksgiving prayer.
