"We Were Always There..."

What I Like About This: We don't know who they are, but we do know that there was a love between them that still speaks to across the decades. You can see it in their eyes and in the gentle affection of their pose.  They were among the bravest of their era, for they recorded the truth of their love for themselves and perhaps unknowingly, as an example for all of us who came after them.

Positive images of people like me... The truth of the matter is that we all need to see people like ourselves. So everyday, I'll post a photo, drawing or some other artwork that depicts Same Gender Loving People as what we are... Only Human.

"A Thought To Ponder..."

What I Like About This: I agree, instead of trying to pretend that it never happened, we need to acknowledge that the wealth of this nation was built upon the theft of a people from their homeland, the theft of their labor and the theft of their lives and humanity which persists to this day.  I am convinced that the most racist white people are merely afraid that the truth of this might be realized by black people, and with that comes a real fear that reparations are due and that all the things we claim to believe in, truth, justice and "the American way" are lies until we do speak the truth about our own ugly history.

"The Views To Love..."

What I Like About This: Some black men don't smile much, it's a stereotype that's often true for a lot of reasons that I'll not go into here, but if anything can bring a smile to someone's face, it's love.

"This Made Me Smile..."

I have to admit, I get really tired of hearing non-gay men give the "Not-Gay" qualifier, are they really that insecure in their sexual orientation...?

"Silence"
Acrylic on canvas
Steve Walker

What I Like About This: The works of the late Canadian artist Steve Walker are my favorites in the genre depicting the lives of SGL/gay men.  This piece entitled "Silence," as do all his works, captures the essence of an aspect of gay culture which was common during his lifetime... Here we see the subject lying awake waiting for a phone call from perhaps the one he loves and we are left to wonder if it ever came.

"We Were Always There..."

What I Like About This: This is a most interesting pose which this couple chose for their portrait together.  Were they being as open about who they are as this pose suggests?  They both look like they're in a bit of a struggle to hold their expression for the long exposure time of photographs from this era, But yes, when I look at this photo, I see two men in love who wanted to preserve a moment in the time of their lives together.

"The Views To Love..."

What I Like About This: When I was younger, I never imagined that I would see a day where we could openly express our love and affection in this way.  There's still a lot of hateful intolerance, but a new day did dawn and we can now show our love in the light of day and be proud and happy about loving someone.

Untitled Nude

Nicolaas Porter
(Aad Nicolaas Sterrebaan)

What I Like About This: Nude works are amongst the hardest to execute well... There's always the danger of crossing the line from tasteful art to full-on pornography. Yet here is a lovely and evocative example of an expert's ability to transit that line.  From the rich coloring and skilled use of light and form, this Dutch artist living in Surinam whose many works feature people of color has created a piece which provokes one to question who, what, when, where and why? As art always has, he gives us a glimpse into a world not our own, but of another's.

"We Were Always There..."

What I Like About This: Here we have a lovingly preserved photo of a vintage couple, who even without the caption reveal the truth of their love for each other.  The look of love is in their eyes and revealed for all to see in their embrace.  These unambiguous photos are among my favorite images of couples from the past, for it's easy to imagine that their love endured and perhaps still does more than 70 years later.

"A Little Sane Advice..."

Sorry, I needed to laugh...

probably still good advice though.

What I Like About This: When lovers embrace, everything is made clear, they become one who are more than two alone. This is love's declaration in full.
