WONDER BAR (1934)

Wonder Bar is an American pre-Code film adaptation of a Broadway musical of the same name directed by Lloyd Bacon with musical numbers created by Busby Berkeley.

For its time, Wonder Bar was considered risqué, barely passing the censors at the Hays Office. The title is a pun on "wunderbar," which is German for "wonderful." Filled with gay references, sexual innuendo and racial stereotypes, including Al Jolson performing in blackface, the film is still considered offensive on many levels, and would help firmly establish enforcement of the Production Code.
