What I Like About This: Here is probably one of the best preserved and surviving series of studio "candid's" featuring a same-sex couple to ever come to light. Yes, of course they are posing for the camera, but what makes these images candid is that the raw emotion of their affection and their choice of poses reveals all that anyone looking at these images would need to know about who they are to each other. It's most remarkable that their unmistakable intention in taking these photographs was to illustrate and preserve for themselves their love and great affection for one another. And yet, I can imagine their worry and doubt as they sought for a photographer willing to record the truth of their lives... I can imagine the courage it must have taken to risk being exposed by someone perhaps unsympathetic to the truth that here are two men who love each other. As I always am, I am thankful that perhaps more than a hundred years hence, I am able to see their love and bear witness to the fact that "we were always there."
