What I Like About This: Although we can never know if these two are truly a gay couple, I see all the signs that point to yes, they are... The casual ease of their pose despite being a studio portrait, including especially the arm draped over the shoulder of the seated fellow.  Also, look at the right hand of the younger man resting on his cap, there is a wedding band on his forth finger and I think that he's purposefully showing it as a way of silently communicating the hidden secret and truth of their relationship. Even though we can't see enough of his partner's hands to know if he too wore a ring to symbolize their love, I fully imagine that he did.
