"One Night Stand"
Oil on canvas
Vincent Desiderio
What I Like About This: There is a certain ambiguity to this work and I think the artist intended this. When you look at this scene, although you know what it suggests even without knowing the artist's title, you're left wondering, Who are they? What are they? I think he purposefully intended for the standing figure to be androgynous, allowing a viewer to make whatever assumptions they will. Is this partially clad subject a female with short hair, or a male with a more endomorphic build than the seated subject...? The more I examine this work, the less sure I am about this. Adding to the confusion and intrigue of the work, in the foreground we see a piece of objet d'art in the form of a nude female sculpture which to my mind, quite counterintuitively suggests the seated subject is gay. The monochromic coloring and realist style draws you in to contemplate all these questions over and over again.
