What I Like About This: A group of young sailors enjoying a liberty day ashore having ice cream on a garden lawn. But the most important part of this scene is the two young men happily embraced and intertwined on the grass before all their friends and shipmates. One could easily conclude that it was merely a prank for the camera, but the caption on the back of this photograph tells the real story: "Ice cream is good on a hot day, Smith & Wade still in love." That these two were a couple is clear and everyone knew it and accepted it... a rare, but wonderfully human scene of love and acceptance from generations ago that reminds us that "we were always there."
