"We Were Always There..."

What I Like About This: What an interesting and intriguing photograph... It looks to be sometime in the 1930s and is a scene of of a group of sailors on deck sunning themselves and admiring a male magazine centerfold showing a college rower. But of course what makes it interesting is that beyond what we can see and discern in the photograph, it makes one wonder what was the actual context of this occasion.  The two principle subjects in the frame are both smiling and happy, and some might even say they seem "gay" (in the old sense of the word).  Thinking back, I can recall during my time in the service more than 50 years after this photograph was taken, the "gay" (current usage) guys would often hang out together in groups like this.  While I can't say that's what we're seeing here, what I can say without reservation is that "we were always there."
