"River God"
Oil on canvas
Roberto Ferri
What I Like About This: Here is an impressive figurative work done in the baroque style. The subject is a depiction of Achelous from Greek mythology, the shape-shifting river god who was the personification of the Achelous River, one of the longest rivers in Greece and who was worshipped as the god of fresh water. Here the artist has depicted him as an elderly and wisened figure above the shoulders, but otherwise retaining the body of a "Greek God." This is an interesting juxtaposition and I think it was this contradiction which first drew my eyes to an appreciation of this work.
