"Cheating at Solitaire"
Oil on canvas on board
Marc Duquette
What I Like About This: Depicted here is an everyday man whiling away a lonely Saturday night. This might seem such a mundane subject for a painting, and yet the artist has created so many intriguing details for us study that I find this work quite mesmerizing. For example, our subject's drinks of choice are not fully revealed to us and yet their brands are instantly recognizable. We're also given several stereotypical clues about our subject's sexuality as well: he wears Doc Martin's, a "wife beater" and jeans and hanging on the wall is his belted leather jacket. As for technique, the artist has expertly employed light and shadow and the empathy of blue colors to draw us into the scene and create an image that one delights in studying and enjoying.
