"We Were Always There..."

What I Like About This: This vintage photograph of a couple from the 1950s reveals not only that they were in love and had decided to make a life for themselves together, but also that they were not afraid or ashamed (despite the times they lived in) to declare their love for one another in this way.  I also think about those who were trusted enough to take photos such as this for brave couples who knew that in the wrong hands such images could destroy lives, careers, hopes and dreams... Surely those who took these photos were friends who perhaps also aspired to the moments of love they captured through the lens of the camera.

Positive images of people like me... The truth of the matter is that we all need to see people like ourselves. So everyday, I'll post a photo, drawing or some other artwork that depicts Same Gender Loving People as what we are... Only Human.

"The Imitation Of Life..."

What I Like About This: This scene from "God's Own Country" reveals the moment that fears melt into love's acceptance and the sweet comforts of believing you're no longer alone in the world. Seeing this scene reminded me of when the beloved one returned to me one late summer night after he'd left for a  new life without me in North Carolina...

I had prayed mightily for his return every day for weeks and months and I was even joined in those prayers by my father who had come to live with me that summer.  My father who'd been absent for almost all of my adult life up to then was incredibly distressed by my broken heart, he'd never seen me so distraught and lost.  And so everyday, my father would pray with me morning and night, that somehow God would make a way for the beloved one and I to be happy and safe and together.

I remember it being around 11 pm on that clear and cool late summer night that my prayers were answered... I had helped my father to bathe and he'd gone to bed for the night.  As for me, I was just beginning my nightly vigil of longing and waiting to hear from the one who had left with my heart and my every hope. Then out of the sorrowful loneliness of that night, as I lay in the dark waiting and praying for a call that I thought after many months would never come, the phone lit up and revealed that it was the beloved one.  As I cautiously answered with only, "Hello Stephen," tremors ran through my body as I listened to hear his voice.  In a tone of despondency and contrition, he simply said, "Can I come see you?" And my reply in a broken and tremulous voice was simply, "Yes, I'll be waiting for you."

As I had done so many times before in our love affair, I took up my seat by the window watching for him.  And a short time later, he arrived and as I watched him walk towards the front door, my heart leapt in my chest and pounded so hard I could hear the blood coursing through my veins.  I quickly went downstairs and opened the door just as he reached for the bell. He stepped through and without a word being spoken between us, he put his arms around me and our kiss and embrace was just like this.  No sorrowful apologies were offered and none was needed... God, I thought, had answered my prayers. I closed the door and he said, "Can I stay with you tonight?"  I answered, "Yes, Dearest" as I took his hand and we climbed the stairs together.

In the bedroom, as I closed the door, I told him of how I'd brought my elderly father to live with me... Stephen expressed doubts about staying, but I shared with him that my father wanted us to be happy together and I told him of how my father had prayed for him with me.  We undressed together and then prayed silently at the edge of the bed as we had done so many times before. And as we climbed under the covers and pressed the nakedness of our bodies together, we whispered the truths of our hearts to one another, and I still remember the joy and the wonder of not being alone in the world that night...

"The Views To Love..."

What I Like About This: You can see the love in their eyes. They are happy together and their happiness makes them free and brave and able to show their joy to the world. This is what love does to you.

What I Like About This: The intimate embrace opens a window to their thoughts of love. Although it's hard to tell whether they are in bed or on a sofa, it's clear that the scene is one of passionate throes. The look of questioning on the embraced lover's face draws you in to wonder was he doubting or confirming their love.

"The Truth Today..."

All is not well, but well enough...

"We Were Always There..."

What I Like About This: That this image from so many summers ago has survived gives me hope that perhaps their love endured as well.  This candid snapshot perfectly captures a moment in time of two men enjoying love's bliss in the summer sun... Splendor in the grass.

"The Imitation Of Life..."

“That summer,” said Ennis. “When we split up after we got paid out, I had gut cramps so bad I pulled over and tried to puke. Thought I ate somethin bad at that place in Dubois. Took me about a year a figure out it was that I shouldn’t a let you out a my sights. Too late then by a long, long while.”

What I Like About This: I once had that same experience of being sick and not realizing or accepting why.  I was a young man then...  I was in the Navy and when I had to depart from him who had become my best mate, I was sick for over a year and it was only upon a short reunion with him that I realized that it was that I had been in love for the first time in my life.  The two days we spent together were filled with an intensity of pain and longing that I still feel today.  On that last night together, we went out drinking as sailors are want to do, and back in the hotel room, he drifted off to a stupored sleep, and I remember how I sat there for hours in the darkness of the night just watching him... the object of my affection just a few inches away, wanting to touch him, even to kiss him, but I dared not. I knew he loved me too, but his love for me was that of a brother, while I realized for the first time in my life that I felt something far more intense and visceral that filled me with fear and self-loathing.

After that last night we spent together, we stayed in touch by many letters and rare but occasional phone calls for the next 20 years, until I had finally come-out at 40 and I realized I didn't know how to tell him that I had loved him as I had, and that my life had changed in such a dramatic fashion...  And most of all, I feared rejection by the one I had secretly loved for so long. And so I ignored his Christmas letter that year and the many that followed over the next several years until they stopped coming...

During the many years of our "friendship," I spun many tales of a happy life in my letters to him.  He knew of my marriage (to a woman I pretended to love because I didn't want to be gay), but not of the disastrous consequences.  He himself had married twice, the second time, happily.  Today, his picture with his lovely wife and two beautiful children (who by now are grown ups), sits in a place of honor on the console table in the hallway outside my bedroom... and there are still days that I linger there knowing that a place in my heart will always belong to him and a love that could have never been.

"The Views To Love..."

What I Like About This: True love adds a sparkle to your eyes, you can see it in their eyes and you know that their love is real. Look at the comfort in their postures and at the way they touch one another, they're not just posing for their wedding photos, but this is how they are with each other all the time.  The passion in their kiss and the happiness on their faces, this is the look of love.

What I Like About This: The colors and the brush strokes evoke a warmth and intimacy that draws you into the work. The play of light and shadow makes me wonder is he merely asleep or is their hidden agony at work.

Well, a month has now gone by and I thought the pain would have eased by now, but I find that instead it only grows a little more each day.  In reality, the wounds haven't even scabbed over yet...  But, I've proved a fundamental truth to myself, and that is that life goes on no matter what.

So, since this has always been my therapy, I guess tomorrow, I'll be back at it and see if it helps.

I know inquiring minds want to know, and someday I'll share it all, but for now I've just got to get on with what's left of life.
