"The Truth About Hate..."

The new poster child for anti-gay hatred has now spoken out boldly about her perceived "right" to hate on GLBT people and equate their "lifestyles" with criminal acts like pedophilia and bestiality.  As I listened to her shockingly offensive non-logic, her most disingenuous statement is that she feels her views are her own... But of course in reality, her views are more than her own since she speaks from the bully pulpit of political office and in fact is using that position to advance her "personal" views.  She expresses the troubling notion that she should be free to hate behind closed doors.

Someone should remind Elias Chan, that unlike in Communist China (she was born in Taiwan*), in this country we hold our political leaders accountable for the actions they take and the statements that they make while in office (especially in the course of their actual duties).  She didn't make these troubling remarks over dinner with friends in the privacy of her home.  But rather, these vile, homophobic remarks were the focus of an official meeting she conducted in her city offices, with her city paid staff for the obvious purpose of determining how to best ingrain and engender her hateful views in the laws of the City of San Antonio.

And of course, the thing most disturbing about this entire episode is that here we have a woman who is enjoying the freedoms and rights that should be available to all including GLBT people, while she herself is an immigrant ethnic minority who enjoys the protection of her rights and her status.  And thus we have here another example of a troubling phenomena, a minority member internalizing the hatred of members of the marginalized majority in a vain attempt to assimilate herself into that larger group.

In the words of Eric Alva, decorated, wounded war veteran and San Antonio native, "Shame on you" Elisa Chan!

* One can only assume that Ms. Chan's parents and grandparents fled Communist mainland China because they wanted to live in a free society, one in which they and their children could enjoy the rights and privileges of freedom and equality.  Surely that is why Ms. Chan came to America, but isn't that the same thing that she through her actions, deeds and words is seeking to deny her fellow citizens who happen to be GLBT?
