"Not The Imitation Of Life..."

López and Mario Bonilla are embraced by their son at their wedding

Marriage equality and "family" arrived in the South American nation of Uruguay this week... Although it was widely reported that the first couple to marry following the 90 day waiting period after the law was passed were Rodrigo Borda and Sergio Miranda of Montevideo, Uruguayan press are now reporting that Rubén López and Mario Bonilla, together for 21 years, were married earlier in the city of Mercedes.

Here is video of Ruben and Mario's wedding.  This couple waited most of their lifetimes for their love to be officially recognized and honored by the community they call their home.  They sign the marriage registry and take their vows in the presence of an overflow crowd of family and friends and most importantly with their son Camilo whom they adopted 17 years ago as a days old infant.  Camilo acted as their best man and as a witness to his fathers' signing of the registry.  This is "not the imitation of life," but is the fulfillment of life's promise...

This is love and this is family.

  1. I love that the news agency that produced this report choose to add "I wish I knew how it would feel to be free" as the background music for this post. It was a bold, positive and affirming move that says a great deal about Uruguayan people.
