That sounds a little funny doesn't it... but it's entirely appropriate. It is a day to be happy if you've given your service to your country and managed to avoid making the ultimate sacrifice in doing so.
Yes, I'll pause today to remember my brothers in arms who are no longer with us, but I'll also be remembering some of the best times of my life, when serving brought pride of purpose through the opportunity to lead and learn and live the truth of what it means to be a patriot, to love one's country and fellow man enough to die for a just cause if need be.
Little did I know at the time, but my closeted service and that of tens of thousands of others like me helped to pave the way to freedoms I dared not even to dream of. Though those hard won freedoms bought at the price of silence, fear and hidden truth are under assault at this moment in our history, I have no doubt that the brave out soldiers, sailors and marines of this generation will see us thorough this final skirmish and on to ultimate victory and the day when every citizen who wants to serve their nation can do so without fear of being who they are.
On this, the eleventh hour, of the eleventh day, of the eleventh month, I am proud to have served!
