The best love songs are always open to multiple interpretations of their meaning and they always evoke memories and truths of your own life and loves. And almost always, as you listen to them you'll realize that they're telling your own story. This is one of those songs... In the context in the video here, it seems to change meaning midstream as it transitions from what appears to be an abandonment of love, to a leaving behind of fear (a lonely heart) and a brave acceptance of that same love.
I first heard this song in an episode of the Australian comedy series, "Superbro," based on Theodore and Nathan Saidden's YouTube mini-series sensation, "Superwog." But I later learned that it's incredibly popular in Asia, having been used in the soundtrack of the Chinese BL (boyslove) series, "Stay With Me," which itself has a very complicated storyline. The storytelling is muddled by China's ban on same-sex stories on television and some quite heavy-handed censorship. Nevertheless, "Stay With Me" reportedly manages to be a very beautiful and bittersweet love story.
BTW: Google gets it all wrong about who to attribute this song to. It's not 73 year old English guitarist, Andy Powell, but this young man here (Andy Powell). And although she's uncredited almost everywhere, the lead vocalist is Linda Roan. This younger Andy Powell specializes in "crafting music for film, TV, and advertising" and I'm guessing this talented songwriter and composer has a very bright future ahead of him.
