When I was young, cable tv was one of my big aspirational goals, for you see Detroit, thanks to it's then very corrupt city government was one of the last big cities to award a cable franchise. When it finally did happen in 1981, my mother wouldn't hear of it, even if I was going to pay for it myself. She'd complain, "Why on Earth would you want to pay for some smut that's not fit to be on free tv...?" So, we never got cable and when I moved into my own home, I thought about it many time but never pulled the trigger.
