Many historians love to explain away the surviving records of the love affairs that occurred between men on the frontiers (and in the military and other sex segregated settings) as simply a case of situational homosexuality... But I suspect the truth of the matter may perhaps lie somewhere closer to this, many same gender loving men were likely attracted to the frontier because it was there that they could be free from the expectations of society to express themselves as heterosexuals and could live in close quarters with the objects of their sexual desires, other men just like themselves.
It's just a thought...

Exactly. This is why any number of men enter the priesthood, as well, to be free of hetero expectations.
