"The Hunted Slaves"
Oil on canvas
Richard Ansdell
Painted 1861, and on display at the International Slavery Museum, Liverpool, England
What I Like About This: It's Black History Month and I'm not afraid to be reminded of the inhumanity my forebears suffered. And, I acknowledge with pride that these are my people. We as a people in this world and especially in this country have endured much, and tremendous hardship still awaits many of us. But the same strength, courage and determination you see in this image of hunted slaves lives in our blood today. Yes, we move differently through the world than most of humanity, and that's because part of our humanity was stolen from us, but we are still part of the family of man.
