I love coming of age films... Perhaps because my own coming of age was so difficult and fraught with fears, traumas and hopeless loneliness. Even at my age now, I quite easily become engrossed in stories like this one. Remarkably, I can identify with such youthful characters and I can become quite moved as I vicariously partake in their experiences. This is a fine example of one of these films.
I've previously mentioned how much I enjoy Tubi and its vast library of LGBTQIA and foreign films. So at this point, their algorithm has learned that I like films that intersect these genres. This morning, this film, "Mi Mejor Amigo" (My Best Friend) was at the top of my recommended queue and once I started it, I couldn't take my eyes away from it.
It's set in Argentina, so as you've guessed, it's a spanish language film with English subtitles. But even without the subtitles, I could enjoy this film because the story, acting and direction are so well done. Early in the film there is a continuity error that I suspect happened when the film was mastered to DVD and Blu Ray, I'll find out soon enough.though, because I loved this film enough to want to own a copy and so ordered it right after I watched this.
BTW: The trailer is quite strange in that it has no sound track, the film is not silent.
If you'd like to see it, it's available on Amazon Prime
and for free on Tubi
