"Carl with Photo of Juan and Bookmark"
Oil on canvas
George Towne
What I Like About This: A work from the artist's MFA thesis depicting survivors of the HIV/AIDS crisis in the 1980s. In each of the works in the series, the artist painted subjects with mementos of their lost lovers. Here a black man holds a treasured photo of his beloved. Significantly, the artist has powerfully captured in the subject the sense of pain and loss that characterized the early days of the epidemic when it was largely ignored by the larger society.
