"A Thought To Ponder..."

Brokeback Mountain ends on Ennis closing the door of the closet where he keeps his and Jack's shirts, but, after he leaves the frame, the camera lingers on this here shot for a while. We can see the closet on the left (we've just been shown what's in it) and a square little window on the right. A green field stretches far into the distance, with a stripe of gold on the horizon.

It's a nice visual metaphor - a pretty obvious one, but still worth pointing out. If we "read" from left to right, then the closet is the past, a past where queer love (the shirts) has to be hidden from sight, and the window is the bright future. Combined with the melancholic, yet hopeful music, I think this is the movie's way of telling us that not all is lost. We can never undo what happened, but we can make sure that every Jack and Ennis that live now and will live in the future can have the life our characters never could.
