Now the really funny thing about this meme is that it's often true, but not always...
I had to work yesterday, so I didn't cook the big Sunday dinner I'd ordinarily prepare. Instead, I stopped at McDonalds on the way home and the thing is that the Big Macs yesterday looked just like they do in the commercials, I mean these things were freaking works of art, picture perfect! But I've also often had the "reality' ones too. I've found that the big difference in what you'll get is in where you get it. Here in Detroit, the inner city franchises for the most part serve up crap that vaguely resembles the pictures on the menu. But if you happen to stop at a franchise in an affluent suburban area, you're much more likely to get what we had last night.
So here are two McDonalds restaurants that I've frequently visited, can you guess which one I stopped at last night?
This McDonalds is located less than 2 miles from my home. I love to take people here on their first visit to Detroit, because when you enter, you're greeted by this...
Yep, that's a wall of bulletproof glass separating you from the employees. Your order comes to you through the bulletproof turntable. Oh yeah, please don't need to use their restroom. They have one, but they won't give you the key, ever since a guy committed suicide by self-immolation (yep, he set himself on fire) in the restroom of the Wendy's a mile further up the road.
And then there's this:
This McDonalds that doesn't look like a McDonalds is in the uber affluent suburb of Bloomfield Hills/ Bloomfield Twp, about 20 miles Northwest of Detroit. Surprisingly, there's no bulletproof glass inside, but there is a working fireplace in the spacious dining room. And, although I don't have a photo to show you, I'd love to have my master bathroom finished like the spacious and sparkling restroom here (no key required).
So that's my McDonalds story... Don't even get me started on KFC.
Well, I don't know if it's a good sign or not, but the McD near my home with the bulletproof glass closed permanently in the fall of 2023. I rarely patronized it and usually drove right past it to another located just outside the city limits in Ferndale.
