"Portrait of John L. Sullivan"
Oil on canvas
Achille Peretti
What I Like About This: A figurative study executed in 1892 by the Italian immigrant artist Achille Peretti. Although he painted a wide variety of subjects including many frescoes in churches across the South and Midwest, this is one of his best known works. He settled in New Orleans and resided in a home in the French Quarter where he likely created this painting. His use here of warm but muted colors and his mastery of light and shadow combine to create a pleasing and timelessly appealing work of art.
