Representatives appeared to unanimously approve the proposal in a voice vote, sending it immediately to President Goodluck Jonathan for him to potentially sign into law in Africa's most populous nation. It wasn't immediately clear if Jonathan would sign the measure, though gays and lesbians already face public ridicule and possible prison sentences in Nigeria.

What's going on here...? I think politicians in the developing world (especially in Africa) are taking a page out of Karl Rove's hate-filled playbook. They've realized that creating and inflaming anti-gay animus is an effective way of diverting attention away from their corrupt practices and innate failures to lead their nations. I fear for my gay brothers and sisters on the continent who will now face even more hatred and oppression as they live their lives in fear.
