In an exclusive to The New York Times today, Walter Harrison, Children's Televison Workshop Executive Vice President for Content, announced that beloved childrens characters, Burt and Ernie of Sesame Street will marry in a live episode of the iconic educational children's television program to air on June 5th on PBS stations across the nation.
When asked why after so many years of denying the truth about the iconic characters, who have lived together since 1969 they we're coming out of the closet and doing so by getting married, producer Ian Catcher said, "Everyone has known the truth about Burt and Ernie, we just think that it's the right time to let them portray the truth about gay relationships... in light of the expected Supreme Court ruling in June, these are lessons that today's children need to learn"
When asked if they feared a backlash from conservatives and Christian evangelicals, Mr. Catcher said, "In light of the rapid change of public opinion on equal marriage rights, we don't believe that there could be a better time for us to promote positive role models for children. Burt and Ernie have earned the respect of entire generations of parents and children world-wide, we don't believe that will change."
