Senator Portman was one of the original sponsors of DOMA and has voted to oppose marriage equality many times.  His change of heart come two years after his son, Will Portman revealed to his parents that he is gay.

This is the power of coming out... When we become real people who are a part everyone's life, it's impossible to dehumanize us and believe that we are "lesser than."  If Senator Portman can have this change of heart, even our most strident opponents can too.
