Beginning in the 1990s there was an explosion of gay-themed cinema that broke with the past and finally depicted our lives and loves, as well as our trials and tribulations more realistically and sympathetically. Yes, there were gay-themed films before the 90s, but they were almost always drivers of negative stereotypes and rarely featured happy-endings for gay people.
Perhaps this new cinema was inspired by our newly found visibility as we dealt with the AIDS crisis... But no matter what brought about these new perspectives on our lives, I'm so glad that I lived to see this day when we could be shown to be as we are, nothing more or less than human and with the same human needs for place, love and companionship as everyone else.
