While I never had an encounter like this during my time in the Navy, I did fall in love with a shipmate and it was brutally painful to be afraid to reveal how I felt.
Here in Canada, we don't have such issues as our Arm Forces generals are open to LGBTQ people and lovers. Those generals as our Canadian Prime Minister are seen in all of our Gay Prides in Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa etc. The Canadian military even did an ad on tv to say that if you want to serve our country your sex orientation isn't important.
