At least 12-20 million Africans lost their lives to the American slave trade alone*...
Of every 100 slaves captured into slavery and bound for America:
Nearly 5 would die waiting for transport at the African coast
At least 12 more die on the voyage, their bodies unceremoniously dumped overboard to the sharks who'd learn to follow slave ships assured of a free meal
Upon arrival in the seasoning camps of the Caribbean where slaves were brutally instructed in their new lot in life, another 27 would die from disease and maltreatment
The remaining 56 humans would make it to the auction block, eventually giving their labor and their lives and that of their children and their children's children to create the wealth of America
Slavery was not 'genteel' or humane, it was a far worse holocaust than many can begin to comprehend
Virtual slavery through the implementation of segregation and Jim Crow laws continued across much of the South after the U.S. Civil War and still exists today in American society
* Although the American slave trade was the largest, many millions of African slaves were sent to Europe, Asia and the Middle East as well.
