"Truth Is The Freedom To Serve..."

In addition to former American Idol, Clay Aiken, North Carolinians have a second openly gay candidate for Congress this year.  Marcus Brandon, 39, first ran for a seat in the North Carolina House of Representatives in 2010. Although he faced long odds against an entrenched incumbent, the lessons he learned as a boy helped him overcome his disadvantage. Marcus worked harder than his opponent and won handily, becoming the first openly gay African-American legislator in North Carolina history.

If Marcus Brandon is successful in his bid to represent North Carolina’s 12th congressional district, he will become the first openly gay black man in Congress.

When asked about the significance of his run for Congress, Brandon said, “I tell people don’t vote for me because I’m gay, [but] because I passed more bills than anybody in the race... And so, we’re about effectiveness. So, for people to see my work, it really makes it a much more powerful conversation to say, ‘You know what, we really don’t care about his sexuality; we’re just glad he put 10 new schools in our district.’”

Good Luck Mr. Brandon!
