Marriage is the affirmation of love and the declaration of our connections to our families, our histories and our traditions.
The grooms dressed in white and, in front of the couple, the shaman or Mayan priest evoked the four elements: water, earth, wind and fire, so that their presence may strengthen and bless the union for many years.
The Mayan wedding ceremony is often chosen for its simplicity, originality, and deep meaning.
This beautiful ceremony was held at the gay-friendly Cancun hotel, Oasis Sens.
Same-sex marriages are legally performed in Mexico City and the state of Quintana Roo (where Cancun is located).
Although currently performed in only several Mexican states, same-sex marriages are legally recognized throughout the country.
The wedding takes place amidst copal incense smoke (an aromatic resin considered sacred and purifying of the environment).
Everyone raises their hands with the couple to signify their support and blessings as the Shaman blows a conch shell invoking the gods to bear witness to the couple’s eternal union.
