"When Our Patience Is Tested..."

Michelle Obama Clashes With GLBT Heckler At Fundraiser

We (GLBT people) have been second-class citizens for so long that at times the thought of it is nearly impossible to bear.  So, I understand the frustration that Ellen Sturtz was feeling which made her speak out at the Democratic fundraiser where she was asked to leave by the First Lady.  But, I do think we should remember who our friends are - the Obama's are, have been and will continue to be, as the President put it, our "fierce advocates" for justice and equality...

President and Mrs. Obama have done more for our cause than any other residents of the White House ever.  And they've done so while endure more disrespect and open hatred than any President and First Lady since the Lincolns.  In light of the constant and vicious attacks that the First Family have had to endure, I can also understand Michelle Obama's frustration when faced by an incessant heckler in the midst of one the few places she should've been able to feel at ease.

Yes, we deserve our equal rights right now!  But as our struggle continues, let us always remember to treat our friends with kindness and civility, even when we feel the impatience of a lifetime of injustice.  Let us never forget their tireless advocacy on our behalf.  I'll save my fevered and impassioned pleas for those who espouse hatred and intolerance for me simply because I'm gay... But as for my friends, I'll thank them for their love and implore them for their continued support, secure in the knowledge that they've proven their friendship many times over.
