"We Were Always There..."

What I Like About This: Here we have a studio photograph of a young army couple, circa WWI. This photo was likely taken in France, where such a pose would not have raised any protest or ire from the photographer. Clearly they are two men caught up in war, but who have also miraculously found love in one another, and that love was such that they wanted to preserve a moment of it for time and all eternity. Their intimate and loving embrace leaves nothing for us to imagine about their relationship, they were lovers and "we were always there."

What I Like About This: Here we have an expertly executed figurative nude painted in a very classical style by young contemporary artist, Kendric Tonn. I love this neoclassical depiction of Endymion, the beautiful young man who spent much of his life in perpetual sleep from Greek mythology. This painting reveals him in his youthful prime, a lean and supple example of male pulchritude. The artist's incredible skills are displayed to us in the impeccable detailing of this scene, everything from the wallpaper to the carpet, and his subject's body is precise and correct, we can even note veins beneath the skin. Our clues to the subject's identity is confirmed with certainty by the skillfully depicted drape of the Grecian colors of blue and white, lending light and interest to this wonderfully executed nude that is both tasteful and appealing to behold.

Husband and I have tried to make a beautiful home for ourselves and our children over the years...

Husband likes to decorate for holidays. Here are some views of what's going on in the backyard.

On the front of our home, in addition to more pumpkins, Husband has ravens and bats adorning the porch along with the autumn plantings, perhaps I'll post some photos of that for Halloween.

What I Like About This: Nearly 70 years have passed since this young couple posed for this photograph on the occasion of their graduation. Some might say, they are clearly good friends and perhaps that could be true... But look closely and you may see what I see: Their embrace is close and quite intimate. Their bodies are literally pressed together, this is a lover's embrace. The looks on their faces we have seen many times in portraits of vintage couples, the one is carefree and joyously happy to be photographed with the center of his heart, while the other's face reveals a half-smile tinged with the worry of telling too much of their secret. We cannot know if what I see here is the truth or not, but we can always know that "we were always there."

What I Like About This: Here is a very voyeuristic painting which is charged with sexual tension and yet subtly modest enough to not cross the lines of artistic interpretation to that of explicit titillation. The wanton look on the face of the subject in the background as he observes his partner in the scene stripping off completes the image and communicates to the viewer that there is more than meets the eyes to witness in this work.
