A man was shot by a Detroit police officer after he stabbed his boyfriend outside the department’s 2nd Precinct Tuesday afternoon on the city’s west side.

Sgt. Michael Woody said the shooting occurred about 2:45 p.m. at 13530 Lesure.

“They got into a domestic violence situation in front of our second precinct,” Woody said. “Our victim began to scream for help as the suspect began to physically assault him with a blade of some type, cutting him.”

Woody said officers came out of the precinct and ordered the man to drop the knife.

“The suspect refused and an officer fired a single round, striking the suspect and ending the attack,” he said.

Woody said the victim and the other man were both transported to a local hospital and are expected to recover.

Ordinarily I probably wouldn't have posted a story like this one... but as I thought about this story for a while, I realized that in the midsts of this couple's personal passions and tragedy, there is a grain of progress...  The news media in Detroit didn't overly sensationalize this story.  They reported it rather matter of factly.  A few outlets didn't even reveal that the victims were an SGL couple, calling them "friends."

While I would love to say I don't understand how a relationship can devolve to a situation such as this, I can't... I know that we are only human and as such we are just as subject to all the human foibles and frailties that everyone else is.  Our passions can run high and our anger can be just as fierce as anyone's.  The positive side of this story is that apparently everyone else is starting to realize this about us, that we are no different, no better, no worse than anyone else... We are only human.
