"It's Not So Funny..."

Far from being funny, I actually found this to be rather tragic... Although China is not a particularly homophobic culture, the pressure to conform to societal norms and family expectations can be great.  It is not at all uncommon for Chinese gay men to marry women to fulfill family obligations to continue their family's legacy.  In fact, a recent development in Chinese gay culture has been the rise of gay matchmaking services designed to pair off gay men not with each other, but with lesbian women so that together they can please their families' expectations while continuing their relationships with their true romantic interests outside the marriage.

I can't help but wonder what happened after this tragic scene unfolded... Was he (or even his poor bride) disowned by family and friends?  Did he and his boyfriend manage to find a way to be together and have a life of truth?  We'll probably never know, but I hope the broken hearts mend and the fears of accepting one's  own heart and the reality of the hearts of those we love will soon pass away so that everyone can be free to be as they are and to love who they love.
