US Pastor: People ‘Grossly Misinterpret’ The Bible On Gays – Jesus Just Said To Love Everyone

An openly gay pastor who was installed in the US state of Ohio at the weekend has said he thinks critics of homosexuality have misinterpreted the bible.

The Congregational United Church of Christ in Plain Township, Ohio, installed Reverend Dennis Coy. The church’s first openly-gay pastor came out two years ago, and suggested those opposed to homosexuality had “grossly misinterpreted” Jesus’ teachings.

“As Christians, we follow Christ,” he said. “Nowhere does Christ say anything about the subject. But he does tell us to love everyone.”

Speaking at a ceremony also marking the 100th anniversary of the church, during which the congregation formed a circle around him, Coy said: “It was a very touching and unexpected moment. The forward thinking and progressive nature of this congregation that’s been around 100 years, to then say, ‘We want to call as our new pastor an openly gay man,’ really speaks to them extending that welcome into the community.”

The former police officer and drug-enforcement agent was unanimously elected two months ago. He came out publicly in 2012, after ending his 10-year marriage to his wife.

He was inspired to come out after attending a sermon led by a gay reverend.
