"It's About Equal Rights..."

On January 31st, Governor Patrick Quinn signed into law Illinois' civil unions bill which will as of June 1st, grant same-sex and unmarried opposite sex couples many, but not all of the rights granted to married couples. While many gay activist applauded this as a significant first step to full marriage equality, I do not... Instead, what this and other "civil union" and "domestic partnership" laws do is set up a system not at all unlike the Jim Crow laws that created "Separate but 'equal'" systems for people of color before the era of civil rights, thus delaying justice and equality for GLBT people.

"Separate but equal is inherently unequal..."
-U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice Earl Warren
(Brown v. Board of Education)

Justice delayed is justice denied..."
- William E. Gladstone, British Prime Minister
(as quoted by Dr. Martin Luther King)
